Siobhan's first set design project: a theoretical set for a proscenium production of A Raisin in the Sun. Supervised by Brian Redfern, Siobhan conducted intensive research and used Vectorworks to create a ground plan and elevations. Though Siobhan's white model has been lost in moving apartments, she still has many of the documents that led up to it. Though Siobhan is certainly no expert when it comes to set design, she is still proud of many of the ideas she came up with and is happy to display this project.
The odd angles and endless, winding hallway are particular highlights to this design.
This project also allowed Siobhan to grapple with her relationship to race. Raised in an Irish-Catholic home in Chicago with a first-generation American father from Oak Park, Siobhan had to face the fact that much of her family's achievements came at the expense of families like the Younger's. Accepting this fact has led Siobhan to continue trying to educate herself so she can better amplify minoritized voices through her work. She also had to accept that she will always have blind spots, and has to utilize her own experiences to tell an authentic story through design. So, Siobhan researched Ghanian art and Harlem Renaissance literature to influence the color palette and based the outline off of her father's childhood home in Oak Park (which can be seen in several of the research slides), alluding to the "American Dream" that Walter so desperately chases. Though Siobhan was initially unsure wading into these waters, she wants her set to amplify Black voices while being true to the story that she has the right to tell.
